Quintus Benziger

Conductor and Musical Director

Quintus Benziger was appointed Musical Director of the choir in June 2005.

Quintus has a wide experience with choirs. He conducted Saffron Walden Choral Society for ten years and Saffron Walden Operatic Society for three seasons. For 22 years to summer 2006 he was Director of Music at St Mary's School, Cambridge where he was particularly involved in productions, including musicals that he wrote himself.

Our President

Mrs Dorothy Garwood joined the choir as accompanist in December 1966. She was elected, by acclamation, Honorary President of Chesterton Choral Society on her retirement from the accompanist role on 3rd April 2006. Dorothy has had a distinguished musical career in Cambridge since 1961.

As a young musician, she entered various music festivals throughout the country, gaining considerable acclaim en route. At the age of 22, she gained her Royal College of Music diploma. At her final concert before retiring as accompanist the Choir performed a varied programme entitled 'Piano Forty', including many pieces chosen by Dorothy herself, and performed as a tribute to her wonderful contribution to the Choir over 40 years.

Accompanist

Our very fortunate association with Hills Road Sixth Form College continues this term with the appointment of Edward Lilley, a talented musician and skilled accompanist who, like his predecessors, is studying for A-levels.

Why not join us?

The choir always welcomes new singers, no audition is required and sight reading, though an advantage, is not essential.

Anyone interested in joining the choir is invited to contact the chair or secretary and to come along to a few rehearsals before deciding whether to join. Tenors and basses will get a particularly enthusiastic welcome!

Occasionally, due to pressure on the availability of music scores, new members may be asked to join at the next start of term - see the Rehearsal Schedule for dates.

What does it cost?

Subscriptions to the choir are currently £42 per year, with a reduced rate of £20 for those aged 18 and under or in full-time education.
